ABOUT US!

 

In November of 1983 Mr. Pashalis Koutzmbis, along with Katerina, his wife, Eleni, their 2 year old daughter and Kosta, their 8 month old son, decided to leave everything behind in his hometown of Nigrita, Greece and come to the land of opportunity; America.

 

  The Koutzmbis Family arrived in San Diego and were greeted by Katerina’s family who then owned a family Restaurant in Downtown. Pashalis began working there immediately as the main chef and Katerina as the full time waitress. The first few years were very difficult for the Koutzmbis family, they were struggling financially and were just about to leave and return to Greece when an opportunity arose.


Zorba’s Family Restaurant was founded in March of 1989 by Mr. & Mrs. Koutzmbis.

After much struggle and desperation of wanting their own business their American dream came true, Zorba’s was originally opened as a Greek and Mexican restaurant because of the uncertainty faced by the Koutzmbis Family from starting out solely as a Greek restaurant “We were scared the people wouldn’t be familiar with Greek food but Mexican food has been around a lot longer in San Diego, so we had less of a risk in opening up our new restaurant.”

 

By January of 1990, less than a year of operation, Zorba’s Family Restaurant became Zorba’s Greek Restaurant San Diegans adapted to Greek food rapidly and not only that, they loved it!! How could they not love the authentic recipes from a chef that had been cooking since he was 15 years old.

 

In 1992, when the restaurant finally became established with daily clientele, Pashalis wanted to try something he thought his clients would love, an authentic Greek Buffet.

And luckily enough he was right, the business doubled by the end of 1992 and hasn’t stopped since! By 1994, Zorba’s had become a successful business and the Koutzmbis Family were grateful their dreams were finally coming true. However, it didn’t stop there; October of 1994 brought another wonderful surprise, a new addition to the family, Aspasia. Now the family was complete and life was magnificent.
 

Zorba’s Greek Buffet is the first authentic Greek Buffet in all of Southern California, bringing you recipes that have been part of the family for over 50 years! We guarantee you’ll love not only the food, but the modern Greek atmosphere, and better yet the live Entertainment every Friday & Saturday night.
